Crispy and better for you waffle churros – fried in the air fryer without a drop of oil and coated with a mixture of cinnamon sugar and served with a homemade chocolate sauce. Presenting my air-fried waffle churros in their best, nutritious forms.
I was introduced to waffle churros at a recently visited country fair. The churros were crispy, nicely dusted with a gingerbread sugar concoction and served with a chocolate dip. With each bite, those felt heaven in the mouth. Unfortunately, they are not the healthiest snack to try. But with Van’s® waffles, I created these amazing baked/air-fried waffle churros that are rich in protein, whole grains, and goodness of wholesome ingredients. Plus, these are dusted with erythritol-based cinnamon sugar and served with my very-own five-minute chocolate sauce.
Those looking for a fruity version of waffle churros will love my blueberry waffle churros served with a classic berry-compote-based sauce. Again, it’s crispy, comforting and so so wholesome. Each bite gives you the ultimate churros-experience and loads of better-for-you, healthy goodness from the ingredients used in Van’s waffles.

Let’s make some waffle churros, shall we? For this recipe, I am using the organic Power Grain and the Organic Blueberry waffles.
How To Make Waffle Churros?
Ingredients:
1 pack Van’s Power Grains® Waffles and Van’s Organic Blueberry Waffles, Cooking oil or cooking oil spray to brush (optional)
Cinnamon Sugar:
1 tablespoon cinnamon powder, 2 tablespoon powdered erythritol sweetener (you can use your favorite sugar-free sweetener too)
Chocolate Sauce:
½ Cup Coconut Cream, ¼ cup Maple syrup, ¼ cup cocoa powder, ½ cup semi sweetened chocolate chips (vegan preferred)
Berry Compote Sauce:
1 cup blueberry, 1 cup chopped strawberries, 1 tablespoon erythritol
Method of Making Waffle Churros:
Start by toasting the frozen waffles as per the packaged instructions. All we need is soft waffles to cut into sticks and air fry. Preheat the air fryer at 355F for five minutes. Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut each waffle into wedges or sticks. (Refer to the image below)
Add parchment paper on the air fryer basket or try. Lay the waffle sticks and wedges and brush with few drops of avocado or coconut oil. You can also use cooking oil spray for this step and just spray evenly on both surfaces. If you want to do it oil-free, skip the oil brushing step. Sprinkle with some cinnamon and air fry for 3 minutes and then for 2 minutes after turning the waffle sticks.
In a shallow bowl, add a tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 tablespoon of powdered erythritol sweetener. Mix well to combine.
Once the air frying time is over, cool the waffle wedges and sticks for 3 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle with some cinnamon sugar or add to the bowl with cinnamon sugar and toss to coat well.
Your waffle churros are ready. Serve them with homemade chocolate sauce or berry compote sauce.
Chocolate Sauce: In a small microwave-safe glass bowl, add coconut cream and maple syrup. Microwave high for 30-seconds and mix. Then add the rest of the ingredients and whish well. Now, microwave again for another 30 to 90 seconds until all the ingredients are well combined. Serve the sauce with waffle churros.
Berry compote sauce: In a saucepan, add 1 cup blueberry, 1 cup chopped strawberries, and 1 tablespoon erythritol. Use a spoon to break the berries and allow them to sweat. When the sauce bubbles and reaches a thick consistency, add two tablespoon of water and switch off the stove. Once cooled, transfer the sauce to a blender and blend till a puree is formed.
Serve the berry compote sauce with Organic Blueberry waffle churros.

These sound delicious. Do you think there's a way to make the churros without an air fryer?

Baking is another option if you don’t want to deep fry the waffle sticks.
