Frequently Asked Questions
One of the best things about this recipe is the fact that it works well with almost all kinds of fish. Codfish is one of the best choices, since it has a nice mild taste and a flaky texture. You can also use haddock, catfish, halibut or any other white fish of your choice for this recipe.
While the process of air frying does lend the fish a nice and crispy coating, there are a couple of additional ways you can add an extra bit of crunch.
Instead of using breadcrumbs, you could use crushed cornflakes, or a mixture of cornflakes and breadcrumbs.
Another great idea to get that crispy crumb is to create a simple thick batter using rice flour seasoned with salt and a little bit of water. Dip the fish into this batter first, coat it with the seasoned crumbs and follow the rest of the recipe as is.
You actually can! The mayo dip can be made weeks in advance. You can also batch make the dip and refrigerate it in a clean glass container for upto 2 weeks. This dip can work wonderfully with almost any appetizer, and can even be served with nachos and chips.
You can also make the seasoned breadcrumbs and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to put them to use.
Tips & Tricks to Make the Air Fried Crumbed Fish
Making the crumbed fish and the mayo dip might be easy, but keeping these little tips and hacks in mind can be a huge additional help.
- If you’re using frozen fish for this recipe, remember to allow it to thaw completely before you use it.
- Dab all the excess moisture on the fish, and then coat it with the seasonings and the breadcrumbs. This will make the fish easier to work with and will get all the spices to adhere to its surface better.
- To lend the air fried crumbed fish an extra bit of flavor and deliciousness, add some garlic powder into the spice mix.
- If you prefer a thick, even coating around the fish, you can dip it in some whisked eggs seasoned with salt and pepper, and then roll it into the breadcrumb mixture.
- Fancy some extra creaminess and tenderness in each bite? Coat the fish pieces in some mayonnaise, and then with some breadcrumbs before you air fry them.
- Don’t have the time to prepare the breadcrumb mixture? You can mix some panko breadcrumbs with your choice of seasonings, and use that mixture instead.
- If you have some leftovers, or are planning to make the crumbed fish ahead of time, remember to use a freezer safe container to store them, and then air fry them when they’re ready to be served.
